Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»

The Muscarella family’s multi-generational connection to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» is a story of perseverance, family, and a shared belief in the transformative power of education.

At the heart of the family’s Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» story is Louisa Buono Muscarella, who served as Art Exhibit Curator in Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»â€™s Fine Arts Library from 1974 to 1993. A beloved member of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» community, Louisa balanced her career and family life while nurturing her own lifelong love of learning. After prioritizing her children’s college educations, she pursued a degree of her own, earning her bachelor’s degree from Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» in 1988 at the age of 57. Her achievement became an inspiration for generations of her family.

Louisa’s children continued that connection to Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³». Her daughter, Rose Muscarella ’74, was among the first in the family to attend the University. A member of Delta Gamma who worked in the Fine Arts Library, Rose met Jay Burgman ’73, president of TKE, at the Student Union. The two married shortly after. Louisa’s son, Sal Muscarella ’81, earned his degree in English and Education and later worked in the ABLE program office, counseling incoming students. Her daughter, Susan Muscarella Ferrara, also attended Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» and worked in the University’s Craft Center, while Susan’s husband, Salvatore Ferrara, took courses at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» as well.

The next generation proudly carried the tradition forward. Louisa’s grandchildren include Diana Ferrara Lillo ’05 and her husband, Graziano Lillo ’04; Louisa Ferrara-Gonzalez, who earned her bachelor’s, master’s and PhD degrees at Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³»; Timothy Muscarella ’07; and Krysta Ferrara ’16. Together, the family’s Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» connections span more than five decades, reflecting a shared commitment to education and the opportunities it creates.

The Muscarella family’s story embodies the enduring connections that make Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» special, as one generation’s love of learning inspires the next. We are proud to celebrate their remarkable family history and continued connection to the University with this year’s Legacy Family Spirit Award.
