The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics projects that healthcare support occupations will grow 13.3 percent between 2025 and 2035, nearly four times the 3.5 percent projected for employment overall.

To help meet that demand, the College of Professional and Continuing Studies (CPCS) is expanding its Allied Health Certificate programs on Long Island and in Manhattan, pairing scholarships and hands-on training with direct connections to employers.

Scholarships for Emerging Dental Assistants

With a $25,000 community grant from the New York Community Trust, CPCS will provide scholarships and comprehensive support to 11 students ages 18 to 29 pursuing the Dental Assistant professional certificate at the Hempstead Adult Education site. 7 percent between 2025 and 2035, also well above the 3.5 percent projected for all occupations, with about 53,000 openings a year nationwide.

The initiative is designed to help students build the skills, credentials and career connections needed to enter Long Island鈥檚 growing healthcare workforce.

Scholarship recipients, along with students in related allied health programs, will have access to certification exam preparation, academic advising and individualized student support. Participants will also take part in five professional development workshops covering career planning, r茅sum茅 development, professional communication, and AI and digital workplace skills, which are increasingly expected in modern healthcare settings.

As students near completion of their programs, CPCS will help them move from the classroom into the workforce. Externships will provide hands-on experience, while interview preparation, employer connections and job-matching services are intended to bridge the gap between learning and a first job.

鈥淭hanks to the generous support of the New York Community Trust, we鈥檙e able to open doors for young people who are ready to build a career in healthcare,鈥 said Sandra Castro, PhD, senior associate dean in the College of Professional and Continuing Studies. “The demand for professionals in these fields keeps growing throughout our communities. For many of our participants, this is the first step toward an undergraduate degree and a future with even more opportunity.鈥

New Manhattan Center Broadens the Offerings

CPCS is also expanding its allied health portfolio at its new Manhattan Center, where it is launching hybrid programs in Clinical Medical Assisting and EKG Technician and Phlebotomy Technician training. Designed with working adults and other nontraditional students in mind, the programs pair flexible online asynchronous coursework with hands-on laboratory experiences and office hours at the center’s state-of-the-art facility.

Together, the initiatives reflect CPCS鈥檚 effort to create flexible routes into healthcare careers while pairing students with the education, support and real-world experience they need to succeed.

In 麻豆传媒映画鈥檚 Department of Emergency Management, faculty members are making preparations of their own鈥攊n this case, for the future of the profession. Under their tutelage, students in the , and programs are learning how to take charge before, during and after crises that threaten their communities.

The Overlooked Consequences of a Transit Strike

who had to choose between waiting on long bus lines, taking sick days or working from home that week. The strike was inconvenient for office workers, but potentially disastrous for many of New York鈥檚 most essential services, such as hospitals, schools and public agencies.

鈥淭elling people to work from home is sound guidance for a large part of the workforce,鈥 said Nicholas Cagliuso, PhD, adjunct professor of emergency management. 鈥淏ut it doesn鈥檛 help the nurse, the home health aide, the retail clerk or the shift worker whose job requires being on site. The LIRR strike is a good reminder that 鈥榓ll-hazards鈥 really means 鈥榓ll-consequences.鈥欌

Emergency Management Training Transcends Disciplines

Students studying emergency management at 麻豆传媒映画 are trained to follow an all-hazards approach, which translates, in the simplest terms, to 鈥渂e ready for anything.鈥 The program鈥檚 curriculum brings together the strengths of several schools at the University鈥攊ncluding the College of Nursing and Public Health, College of Arts and Sciences and Robert B. Willumstad School of Business鈥攖o provide students with an interdisciplinary framework that can be applied to any emergency in any industry.

Terry Cooper, DHSc, clinical assistant professor and director of emergency management, calls emergency management 鈥渁n art and a science.鈥 鈥淭o be able to serve people to the best of our ability, we need to wear so many hats,鈥 he said. 鈥淥ur students are developing skills in everything from project management to human resources, communications, technical writing and science.鈥

Dr. Cagliuso echoes the sentiment. The backgrounds that serve students well in this profession, he says, are legion: public health, transportation, urban planning, public administration, business, labor relations and more. 鈥淲hatever your co-discipline or your interest is, wherever you鈥檙e coming from, there鈥檚 a space for you in this program,鈥 Dr. Cooper added.

Preparing for the Big Picture Makes the Biggest Impact

No matter their background, emergency managers must be able to see the big picture. Professionals working on the LIRR strike would have been able to envision, for example, how displaced rail commuters would crowd roads and subway stations. And, most importantly, they鈥檇 have seen the strike coming. 鈥淭his strike had a visible runway: years of negotiations, federal emergency boards, a near-miss in 2025 and a concrete timeline for mediation under federal labor law,鈥 Dr. Cagliuso said. 鈥淎 good emergency manager tracks a deadline the way they鈥檇 track a hurricane’s path.鈥

Unlike a hurricane, however, the LIRR strike left behind minimal damage in the end. All things considered, Dr. Cooper believes, this was 鈥渁 plan that went right.鈥 Commuters were notified in advance, the incident was resolved within three days and, in the meantime, nothing fell apart.

Teaching Students to Think on Their Feet

Though a deal was reached late on Monday night, full service was not restored for nearly 24 hours. Dr. Cagliuso sees a critical lesson there: 鈥淟ive by the rule of no surprises.鈥 As he notes, the LIRR couldn鈥檛 just 鈥渇lip a switch鈥 to get trains running in time for Tuesday morning鈥檚 commute. 鈥淢y advice to newer professionals is to challenge your assumptions, not just your procedures. Exercise the oddball but plausible scenarios.鈥

Dr. Cooper plans his own curriculum around the inevitable oddball scenario, too. Though his classes are held online and asynchronously, he makes room for real-time discussions with students, often centering around current events鈥攍ike a recent cyberattack targeting supermarket refrigerators in France鈥攖hat are continuously evolving.

鈥淭hese future professionals are going to have to make decisions on the fly that require critical thinking. Sometimes there isn鈥檛 a right answer, there鈥檚 just a best option,鈥 he said. 鈥淟earning this early will make students much more competitive in their fields.鈥

麻豆传媒映画 has a long history of sustainability鈥攆rom a community garden to a geothermal heating and cooling system to the recent construction of a solar panel roof on the Center for Recreation and Sports, adding to the existing solar panels on Swirbul Library. Now 麻豆传媒映画 is expanding its commitment to improving energy efficiency and creating an environmentally friendly campus.

It begins with Kyungmin Lee, PhD, the inaugural director of sustainability in the Office of Sustainability and assistant professor in the Department of Environmental Studies and Sciences. 鈥淢y role is to bring students, faculty and staff together to advance sustainability initiatives across the campus at 麻豆传媒映画,鈥 Dr. Lee said.

At the heart of 麻豆传媒映画鈥檚 push for sustainability is (STARS). Managed by the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), STARS is a framework for colleges and universities to measure their sustainability performance.

鈥淧articipating in STARS is an opportunity to bring our existing efforts together and establish a sustainability direction for future work,鈥 Dr. Lee said. 鈥淲e want to recognize what our campus community has already accomplished and make it more visible.鈥

Measuring What Matters: The STARS Initiative

As a STARS participant, 麻豆传媒映画 will gather data on various aspects of campus life, including academics, food and dining, buildings and grounds, and more, and earn points toward a Bronze, Silver, Gold or Platinum rating.

The STARS initiative will involve the entire campus. “Students can help collect and analyze the data, and brainstorm and propose possible sustainability projects,鈥 Dr. Lee said. 鈥淔aculty can support these projects with students so they can be implemented on campus, and staff can bring knowledge about how the University operates and what is feasible to implement on campus.”

STARS data collection and sustainability projects will be coordinated and reported by the Sustainability Task Force, while Sustainability Fellows will brainstorm and carry out the actual projects.

麻豆传媒映画 junior Laurel Owen and first-year student Mahan Nanandhan have already signed on to assist with data collection.

鈥淔or now, we鈥檙e learning how to collect data for the STARS reporting system,鈥 said Nanandhan, an environmental studies major. 鈥淭hey updated it recently from version 2.0 to 3.0, so it鈥檚 a whole process, but we鈥檙e getting there.鈥

For Owen, also an environmental studies major, the work is personal. 鈥淚鈥檓 a huge nature lover,鈥 she said. 鈥淚 was raised to respect the natural world, and I wanted to channel that into action.鈥

Beyond the rating itself, Dr. Lee sees STARS as a way to connect to efforts already happening across campus. “People may already be doing sustainability work in different departments, but without knowing who is doing what,鈥 Dr. Lee said. 鈥淭his process will give us a reason to connect with each other across departments, share information and identify opportunities to work on sustainability initiatives together.”

New Ways to Live and Learn Green

To integrate sustainability into campus life and the academic curriculum, 麻豆传媒映画 is developing a new Living and Learning Community and a first-year seminar focused on sustainability.

The Living and Learning Community will bring together a group of students to live on campus in the same dorm hallway. “The idea is to have a group of students with shared interests and cohort them so they feel a sense of community,鈥 said Aaren Freeman, PhD, professor of biology and chair of environmental studies and sciences.

Students will decide what sustainability practices and activities they want to undertake, and 麻豆传媒映画 will provide support. 鈥淚f they want to compost, we鈥檒l provide the materials,鈥 Dr. Freeman said. Students can also participate in cleanups, invasive species removal and other projects that interest them.

Meanwhile, the first-year seminar, themed Into the Wild and taught by two environmental studies faculty members, will emphasize campus sustainability through field trips and classroom learning. Students have the opportunity to shape the course. 鈥淭he professors have academic freedom to teach the class how they want, but we’re all working together on this,鈥 Dr. Freeman said. 鈥淭here’s a lot of room for modification and feedback along the way.”

Both initiatives are set to begin in Fall 2027.

    Students Leading the Charge

In addition to assisting with STARS data collection, 麻豆传媒映画 students are shaping the campus sustainability efforts.

Owen, president of the , a student club that coordinates volunteer sustainability opportunities in the community, attended the first STARS workshop with other members of the EAC. There, they presented their list of demands to improve sustainability on campus. Many of those demands will form the foundation of future STARS projects.

Nanandhan, who also attended the workshop, plans to go to law school so he can help draft and implement environmental policy. “I want to make an impact,鈥 he said. 鈥淚 don’t want to just sit by and watch people run things and leave some of us out. I want everyone to feel heard.鈥

For Owen, the stakes reach well beyond 麻豆传媒映画鈥檚 campus. 鈥淚t鈥檚 about thinking about the future of the planet and of humanity, and doing our part so generations after us will have an earth to live on that鈥檚 sustainable,鈥 she said.
