Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» has been awarded $982,000 through the U.S. Department of Commerce Minority Business Development Agency’s to establish the Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» Entrepreneur Experience. Fully funded by the grant, this regional program is provided at no cost to a select group of undergraduate and graduate students in the (WSB) as well as nonmatriculated participants. The initiative is designed to position aspiring entrepreneurs to launch, grow and sustain new ventures—and prepare them for real-world 21st-century opportunities.

This program focuses on high-growth sectors—such as AI, cleantech and software—identified by Empire State Development, New York state’s chief economic development agency. It will also address high-need, under-resourced public sectors facing critical local shortages, such as behavioral health, eldercare and social services, and will connect participants with real-life project-based externships.

“Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» is proud to be nationally recognized for its commitment to social mobility. The Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» Entrepreneur Experience will further advance that focus across and beyond the Greater New York City region,” said MaryAnne Hyland, PhD, dean of the Willumstad School of Business. “The program will support new businesses in high-growth and high-demand industries in New York, and the program participants will have a holistic experience that will support strong outcomes in a new model for economic development.”

Launching the Next Generation of Student Founders

The Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» Entrepreneur Experience connects aspiring entrepreneurs with the New York area’s business and innovation scene. Over nine months, Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» students will complete six four-week sprints, developed by Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» business faculty, to build the knowledge and skills to launch a venture. Enrolled student entrepreneurs will learn from a faculty-led curriculum, discussions and lectures with experts, and support from coaches and peers.

Launching in February 2027, the program’s first two cohorts of 20 students (Spring 2027 and Fall 2027) are open to both Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» students and nonmatriculated individuals seeking to launch their own business. Eligible entrepreneurs must live, work or attend school in one of the following counties:

  • New York: Bronx, Kings, Nassau, New York, Queens, Richmond, Suffolk
  • New Jersey: Essex, Hudson

Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» will partner with to provide strategic and comprehensive consulting for this program, tapping into the firm’s data-driven, human-centric expertise in equitable development and sustainable growth building. An additional partnership with , a platform that facilitates project-based externship experiences, will allow the Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» Entrepreneur Experience to provide hands-on opportunities for participants to develop go-to-market strategies, products and fundraising skills.

The Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» Entrepreneur Experience targets startups within two sectors:

  • High-Growth: Biotech, cleantech, software/AI and fintech, aligned with .
  • High-Need: Healthcare, behavioral health, social services and EdTech, aligned with ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s nursing and public health, psychology, business administration, artificial intelligence, social work, education, and the sciences offerings to address regional workforce gaps.

Strengthening the Greater New York City Ecosystem

Leveraging ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s Garden City campus and its midtown Manhattan Center, the initiative connects student founders across Greater New York, including all five New York City boroughs, Long Island and northern New Jersey. Local government, nonprofit and regional startup partners are also invited to engage with this opportunity.

Applications to the program are open now through January 19, 2027, for the inaugural February cohort, and ongoing for Fall 2027 enrollment. Applicants must be the original founder of their startup idea.

Rooted in Top-Ranked Business Education

The Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» Entrepreneur Experience builds on the academic prestige and proven track record of the Robert B. Willumstad School of Business. Accredited by AACSB International, a distinction only held by fewer than 6 percent of business schools worldwide, ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s WSB ranks as the No. 1 undergraduate business school on Long Island by Poets&Quants and is recognized among the best in the nation by The Princeton Review.

Furthering its reach across the region, the school has expanded its programs to ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s Manhattan Center, offering flexible learning pathways such as its new Flex MBA, enabling students to earn a degree in as little as one year.

Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» has once again been recognized among the nation’s top higher education institutions in the U.S. News & World Report 2027 , jumping seven positions overall from 2026 to No. 191 and placing among the top 20 universities in New York State. Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» is also debuting at No. 93 in the new category.

“´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s strong national rankings reflect something much deeper than metrics; they reflect a culture of care we foster every day,” said Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» President Michael Balboni ’81, JD. “Behind these numbers lies a close-knit community where faculty members mentor with heart, staff go above and beyond and students support each other’s growth. Our success is driven by the power of these personal connections and the deep sense of belonging that defines the Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» experience.”

´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s student outcomes measures, including a 4-percentage-point uptick in its six-year graduation rate and an increase in first-year retention, helped support the University’s ranking among its peers this year.

This rise reflects the University’s growing reputation for premier healthcare education, and this year expanded ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s nursing offerings to its new Manhattan Center to help address New York state’s critical nursing shortage. Students at that location and at ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s Garden City campus gain hands-on training in a state-of-the-art Clinical Education and Simulation Lab (CESiL), the only lab of its kind accredited by the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH).

Earlier this year, the U.S. News Best Nursing Schools: Master’s list placed Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» at No. 87, securing a spot in the top 13.5 percent of accredited graduate nursing programs nationwide. ´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) program was newly ranked on the outlet’s DNP list, expanding the University’s footprint in doctoral-level nursing excellence; the Master of Public Health was also ranked.

´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s commitment to healthcare education is further reinforced by recent key appointments to its board of trustees, including Board Chair Lenny Achan ’99, CEO of LiveOnNY, and new member Michael Dowling, CEO emeritus of Northwell Health—both of whom bring immeasurable industry expertise to the institution.

“Our exceptional NCLEX results and 92 percent career outcomes rate demonstrate the power of an Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» nursing education,” said Deborah Hunt, PhD ’12, dean of the Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» College of Nursing and Public Health. “By pairing rigorous clinical simulation with individualized support, our graduates are sought-after clinicians and public health leaders who step directly into critical healthcare roles.”

For psychology doctoral students, the move means expanded opportunities for hands-on clinical experience in a bustling urban setting, closer to the diverse population they’ll serve throughout their careers. The Willumstad School is also known for its undergraduate programs and was recently recognized as a Best Undergraduate Business School by Poets&Quants, ranking ahead of all other Long Island institutions.

We spoke with MaryAnne Hyland, PhD, dean of the Willumstad School, to learn more about the programs and the tuition-saving Manhattan Advantage Award scholarships available to Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» alumni.

What makes Flex MBA such a flexible option for working professionals?

The Flex MBA program is a 36-credit program that offers many convenient options for students. Students can earn their degree in one year or choose to study part-time in our two-year track. Courses will be in a hybrid format, with some class sessions held in the evening at the Manhattan Center and others conducted online. This setup offers the convenience of online learning with the personalized support and networking associated with in-person classes.

Is the Flex MBA program only for students with a business background?

No, not everyone comes with a business background. We have students with healthcare backgrounds and students with experience in various other fields outside of business, and we help to acclimate them. We provide online modules to help them understand some of the business basics so they’re ready to go once they start the program.

Are the graduate certificate programs flexible too?

We’ll be offering two certificate programs at the Manhattan Center: the business analytics certificate and the human resource management certificate. The courses for those programs fold right into the Flex MBA program. So if a student wants to start out by earning a certificate and then enrolling in the MBA program, they can take these three to four courses, and those credits carry right in. These certificates offer a nice way to test the waters of what it’s like to be in school again and the ability to walk away with a strong credential, even if they don’t want to pursue a full master’s degree.

Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» alumni can earn their MBA at the Manhattan Center for only $20,000. How is that possible?

We are really excited to offer this opportunity to Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» alumni as a way to kick off the opening of the Manhattan Center. It works by combining two scholarships: our new Manhattan Advantage Award scholarship for $10,000 and our Alumni Award for Graduate Study scholarship, which covers $5,000 per year. If students take two years to complete this program on a part-time basis and they receive $5,000 a year in addition to the $10,000, one-time Manhattan Advantage Award, they can complete their degree for under $20,000, which is quite reasonable for an AACSB-accredited [Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business] program.

How does the Flex MBA program differ from other MBA programs?

We are trying to give students the skills that they need to be successful in today’s workplace. The Flex MBA program, for example, is a relatively new program that focuses on solving business problems. We have problem-solving days built into the program where students come in—outside of their classes—to work in teams on a project for a real company. They do this first without AI to work on their critical thinking skills, and then they use AI so they can see the differences between what they generated as a team and what AI assisted them with. That’s a distinctive feature of our program that we’re very proud of. We think it’s unique, and we get great feedback from our students about it.

It’s also the personalized attention that students really say makes their education special and valuable. When we ask students why they chose Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół», they almost always mention that it’s a place where professors know your name. There are small classes, and we have dedicated staff there to assist the students with finding jobs and internships.

What are your hopes for the first year of the Flex MBA program at the Manhattan Center?

I hope that it’s a program where students really thrive. My hope would be that the students who participate in this kickoff year of the program have an excellent learning experience in our brand-new, state-of-the-art facility.

´ˇ»ĺ±đ±ô±čłóľ±â€™s innovative MS in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning program is coming to the new, state-of-the-art Manhattan Center in Fall 2026, expanding opportunities for students to advance their careers in tech, engineering, and other in-demand fields impacted by AI.

“A lot of people are looking to upskill and understand how their professionalization can remain relevant in an AI agent workforce,” said Anil Venkatesh, PhD, director of the program and associate professor of mathematics and computer science. “We wanted to offer this program at a place that would be convenient for working professionals, and the Manhattan Center made a lot of sense.”

By expanding this program to the new state-of-the-art facility, located just steps from Grand Central Station at Fifth Avenue and 44th Street, Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół» is making it even easier for students to develop these career-defining skills, network with other forward thinkers, and explore job opportunities.

“We are expecting to see a lot of professionals from diverse job backgrounds who will bring some really interesting perspectives,” Dr. Venkatesh said. “That will only increase the overall engagement of courses.”

The MS in AI and Machine Learning is just one of the programs in the first wave of 13 graduate and professional offerings coming to the Manhattan Center. Students can choose from degree and certificate programs in business, education, healthcare, psychology, and social work.

A world of career options

The AI program, which launched this year on Â鶹´«Ă˝Ół»’s Garden City campus, is designed to prepare the first generation of AI professionals for advanced careers in technology, government, healthcare, financial services, logistics, e-commerce, and virtually any other field. Current job titles include AI engineer, machine learning engineer, data scientist, data analyst, and business analyst.

Courses in the master’s degree program combine practical, real-world learning experiences with deep theoretical knowledge that can be applied to AI models—not just now, but as technology evolves.

“Ultimately, the theory of AI is not something that was just invented,” Dr. Venkatesh said. “It has existed for quite some time. And understanding that theory is going to make it so that you can plug and play with whatever new model or paradigm comes along.”

The program is also built to adapt to new AI careers and applications as they continue to emerge. The program’s seminar, for example, is updated every year with new tools and input from speakers currently working in the industry. And Dr. Venkatesh’s course on artificial intelligence and machine learning algorithms is consistently refreshed with the latest cutting-edge algorithms and best engineering practices.

As Dr. Venkatesh said, “We’re both staying up-to-date with contemporary discoveries and innovations and incorporating foundational math and statistics that will be useful no matter where the industry goes.”

Customizing AI education for different professions

AI isn’t only impacting technology companies and engineering careers. It’s being applied across sectors, including government, healthcare, and financial services.

“We’ve had students who’ve worked in programming-heavy disciplines,” Dr. Venkatesh said. “But we also expect to see folks with backgrounds in statistics as it relates to life sciences and healthcare because AI tools are tremendously valuable in those disciplines.”

To that end, Dr. Venkatesh makes a pointed effort to customize his Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning Algorithms course for students’ professional goals.

“When I assign projects, I explicitly invite students to counter-propose a different topic if there’s something specifically suited to their particular professionalization,” he said. “As long as it’s comparably challenging and relevant to the course, I accept the proposal.”

Students responded enthusiastically to the invitation, proposing and carrying out research projects in healthcare, bioinformatics, sports analytics, financial services, and business analytics.

Thinking ahead to the fall, Dr. Venkatesh looks forward to welcoming the program’s first cohort to the Manhattan Center and continuing to teach as this exciting field evolves.

“The other professors and I who put this program together really love teaching it,” he said. “We’re excited by the format of the course and the type of student that we’re orienting toward. This is some of the most fun teaching we’ve had in a long time.”
